3. Character Creation
Character Creation

Choose a Name
Your name will communicate a lot about what type of player you may be, think carefully before selecting one!

Hair, Skin, and Clothing
There are a number of options for each of these traits, all of which can be changed later on during the course of play. Starter clothing provides no protection against attacks, but is provided for modesty's sake. Gargoyles have the options for different styles of horns instead of hair.

Race
Each race has their own set of special abilities (in addition to differing physical appearances). They also have access to different types of weapon, armor, and clothing. Following is a brief description of each:

Humans
The first playable race in Ultima Online. Humans naturally heal faster than Elves and Gargoyles and are more adept at basic resource gathering and can carry greater weights. Most significantly, they have the "Jack of All Trades" trait, which provides them a "hidden" minimum of 20 skill points in all skills - even ones they have not trained past 0. Humans are the most widespread race, with kingdoms in Britannia and Tokuno, as well as towns in Malas and the Lost Lands.

Elves
The Elf race hails from Heartwood, and their lives are tied to the wellbeing of all of Sosaria. Due to this Elves are more in touch with nature, granting them a greater ability in locating special resources. Their wisdom imparts an automatic increase to their total Mana as well as a higher natural resistance to energy-based attacks. They also have a higher ability to move without being tracked, and are better able to detect others who are hidden. They also have better eyesight in the darkness, meaning they do not have to make use of the "Night Sight" spell at nighttime or in dungeons as Humans and Gargoyles do.

Gargoyles
Though only recently introduced to UO as a playable race, the Gargoyles have a long history in the Ultima franchise. The Gargoyle home is on the Ter Mur facet. Due to their size, they are not able to ride mounts, but instead rely upon their wings for quicker transportation. Gargoyles are fierce warriors and are able to do greater damage as they take more damage themselves. They also have greater ability in the Throwing and Mysticism skills, and are more adept at Imbuing weapons with magical properties.

Gender: Male or Female

There are few major differences between the genders. There are some armor and clothing pieces that are gender-specific, and some mounts can only be ridden by one gender or another.

4. Select Skills
Skill Selection

There are many different skills in Ultima Online. You are free to mix and match different skills on a single character - you could have a warrior who dabbles in alchemy, a mage who is also an accomplished blacksmith, or a bard that has the uncanny ability to always reel in the "big one" when fishing. To start, you are presented with pre-selected skill sets that suit a particular type of character. Choosing the "Advanced" option allows you to pick three starting skills and adjust their level as well as the level of your starting Stats (Strength, Intelligence, and Dexterity). The starting items and skills you receive are determined by your choice on this screen.

5. Starting Location
Starting Location

Your final step in the Character Creation Process is choosing a city to start in. Select either the Trammel or Ter Mur facets at the bottom, and select each town to read a description of them before making your choice. Travel between towns is usually accomplished via permanent town moongates.

6. Additional Information

Movement
Basic movement in Ultima Online is fairly simple, hold down the right mouse button and your character will follow the cursor. The greater the distance between your character and the cursor the faster the character will move, up to maximum movement speed. The keyboard's arrow keys can also be used for movement.

Travel
Travel can be on foot, walking or running. For greater mobility a mount can be obtained, a basic horse can be bought from an npc stablemaster in any town that has a stable or specialised pets may sometimes be found for sale at New Magincia Bazaar. Rideable llamas, ridgebacks, swamp dragons, desert ostards or forest ostards may all be ridden by characters with no taming ability as can the more specialised giant beetle, fire beetle, and pack animals.

Magical Travel
Moongates can be found at certain locations throughout the land. Stepping into such a gate can transport you magically to another public moongate selected from a list. There are several other platforms and magical ways of teleporting in the world, you just have to find them.

Mage shops in most of the land's towns sell an item called a "rune stone". Characters with sufficient magery can use a spell "mark" on these runes. Two further spells can be cast by a mage using such a rune as a target, recall and gate travel. Casting recall on a marked rune will transport the caster to the location at which the rune was marked. Casting gate travel on it opens a moongate similar to the public ones, allowing several people to step through and arrive at the marked location. Warriors with the skill "chivalry" also have a travel spell which can be cast on a marked rune, "sacred journey". Example: A character standing in his house might "mark" a rune. He can then cast "recall" (or sacred journey) on that rune when he has been adventuring and be magically transported to his home.

Marked runes can be stored in a Rune book or Runic Atlas, such books are written by scribes and can be used by characters with no magery or chivalry when "loaded" with recall scrolls. Some players' houses have whole libraries of these runebooks for the use of fellow players.

Being [young]
When you enter Sosaria for the very first time, you will be considered a "young" player, this designation will appear over your head in brackets after your name, identifying you to other players. Young status gives the following protections and restrictions, while it lasts:
Monsters that would normally react in a hostile manner will not attack young players, except in self defense, unless they are quest monsters . (you will receive a message in your journal if a monster wants to attack you so you can learn which monsters are hostile)
Young players will be teleported to a healer upon dying and will retain any belongings.
Young players can insta-log anywhere.
Young players may not loot monsters they did not kill for two minutes after the death of the monster.
Other players may not loot monsters killed by young players.
Young players may not travel to the Felucca facet; this is the facet on which you can be attacked by other players.
Young players may not steal from other players or NPCs.

Losing Young Player Status
"Young" status is affected by your total playtime with your account, and is not calculated on a per-character basis. A player loses their "Young" status if they spend more than 40 hours logged into UO and have more than 450 total skill points.
Players can also end their "Young" status by saying (typing the words and hitting the enter key) the words:
I renounce my young player status
